World Largest Container Ship ready to sail out from Tianjin- Xinhua
TIANJIN, July 8 (Xinhua) — MSC Gulsun, the world’s largest container vessel by capacity, set sail from northern China’s port city of Tianjin on Monday to northwestern Europe. MSC Gulsun is capable of carrying 23,756 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), according to Jonathan Zhu, managing director of Greater China for MSC Mediterranea.
After visiting multiple ports including Qingdao, Shanghai, Algeciras, Gdansk, Kaliningrad and Rotterdam, the ship, 399.9 meters long and 61.5 meters wide, is planned to arrive in northwestern Europe. Yu Lei, general manager of China Ocean Shipping Agency Tianjin Co, said his cargo during the maiden voyage includes steel, furnishings and chemicals. Ltd. Zhu said the ship chose to begin its maiden voyage at Tianjin Port, as it is an important gateway port in northern China that boasts wide waterways and good berthing conditions. With trade links with more than 180 countries and regions, the port now plays an important role in the proposed Belt and Road Initiative in China. Its container performance in the first quarter of this year exceeded 8.33 million tons, a year-on-year growth of 6.7 percent, greater than Chinese ports ‘ average development.
The ship was built by Samsung Heavy Industries.
