Deck Cadet
DNS – Diploma in Nautical Science
Duration of the course: – 1 Year
Academic Qualification: –Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with an average PCM score of 60% and 50% in the English language.
Physical Standards:– Medically fit as per the standards set by M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.
Eyesight:-Candidates have to qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended
CAREER PROGRESSION :
PHASE 1 :- 1 year course at the Training institute
PHASE 2 :- 18 months training on ships.
PHASE 3:- On completion of the sea-time, one can give the 2nd mate examination – certificate of competency.

BSc in Nautical Science
Duation of the course :- 3years B.Sc Degree in Nautical Science
Academic Qualification :– Pass in(10+2) From a Recognized Board with 45% Average in PCM
Age Limit :- 25 Years
CAREER PROGRESSION :
PHASE 1 :- 3 year course at the Training institute
PHASE 2 :- 12 months training on ships.
PHASE 3:- On completion of the sea-time, one can give the 2nd mate examination – certificate of competency.

Trainee Seaman
Duration of the course – 6 Months
Academic Qualification –Pass 10th or equivalent examination with Science and Maths as subject with aggregate 40% and 40% marks in English language.
Age Limit :- 17.5 to 25 years
Physical Standards :- Eye Sight 6/6 and Physically fit
CANDIDATE WILL SAIL ON SHIP FOR 6-9 MONTHS DEPENDIING ON THE COMPANY ‘S CONRTACT
THEN WILL OBTAIN WATCHKEEPING CERTIFICATE TO SAIL AS AN ORDINARY SEAMAN.
FOR OBTANING WATCHKEEPING TO SAIL AS ORDINARY SEAMAN
Category – I
Rating with Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Deck Rating.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum six months sea service in the deck department, as applicable
- Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
- SSC Mark sheet/ Pass certificate, if not exempted
- Completed approved training record book for watch keeping ratings
Category – II
Rating without approved Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Deck Rating.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum fifteen months sea service in the deck department, as applicable – full service under INSA/MASSA/FOSMA/ICCSA and/or approved RPSL companies with entry in Indian CDC.
- Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
- Completed approved training record book for watch keeping ratings
Category – III
Rating without approved Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Deck Rating – Part or full service through Non RPSL agencies.
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum fifteen months sea service in the deck department, as applicable – Service under through Non RPSL agencies having entries in foreign CDCs.
- Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
FOR OBTANING COP TO SAIL AS ABLE BODIED SEAMAN
Able Bodied Seman/Helmsman/Quarter Master
Category -1 Seafarer is in possession of WKC issued prior 01 jan 2012 and has completed 12 months (or 18 months without TAR book) of sea service as watch Keeping Rating between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012
Sea Service –Minimum 12 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(with completed approved TAR Book)
OR
Sea Service- Minimum 18 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(without completed approved TAR Book)
Category -2 Seafarer is in possession of WKC issued on or after 01 jan 2012 until 31 Dec 2016 and has completed 12 months (or 18 months without TAR book) of sea service as watch Keeping Rating between 01 jan 2012 and 31 Dec 2016
Sea Service –Minimum 12 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(with completed approved TAR Book)
OR
Sea Service- Minimum 18 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(without completed approved TAR Book)
Category -3 Seafarer is in possession of WKC issued on or after 01 jan 2017or part of the Seatime completed after 01 jan 2017 and has completed 12 months of sea service as Watch Keeping Rating after 01 Jan 2017
Sea Service –Minimum 12 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(with completed approved TAR Book)
OR
Sea Service- Minimum 18 months sea service Between 01 jan 2007 and 01 jan 2012(without completed approved TAR Book)
Able Bodied Seaman to Bosun:-
Bosun := The rank of Bosun onboard ship is given by the company on the basis of seniority and work experience and conduct /Behaviour onboard.
Minimum of atleast 4-5 ship experience is required for promotion
CAREER PROGRESSION :
Scheme for Deck Ratings to appear for Second Mate (Foreign-going)
Entry Qualification:- 10th Standard /12th standard with PCM is also require to undergo same process Minimum 50% marks in English language.
(Requirement of English: Candidates should have passed in the English language as a subject with minimum 50% marks at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree / Diploma course, conducted by the recognized Board or any University.)
Age Criteria:- Minimum 18 years
Medical fitness:- As per Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000.
Eye sight & Colour vision: As per Merchant Shippin (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000.
Sea Service Requirement:
36 months Sea time is required
Bridge watch keeping duties (documented in an approved training record book) under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than 6 months. However, the candidate may be permitted to undertake the competency course and the written examination and / or the modular courses on completion of 30 months sea service. An EXN-45 form will be issued to these candidates as communication of the result of the written examination. Subsequently, the candidate may complete the requisite Bridge watch keeping duties (documented in an approved training record book) under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than 6 months and thereafter appears for the oral examination.
(However, this period of 36 months may be reduced to 24 months provided the candidate has undergone Structured Shipboard Training Programme from a DGS approved DLP provider (effective from 01st October, 2008) of not less than 24 months which meets the requirements of section A-II/1 of the STCW Code and is documented in an approved training record book, including bridge watch keeping duties under the supervision of the master or a qualified officer for a period of not less than 6 months.)
NWKO NCV Certification:
Duration four months (NWKO NCV course)
written and oral examination of NWKO NCV certification.
Advanced Modular Courses:
All Modular courses required for the award of Certificate of Competency as NWKO NCV- (AFF, PSCRB, MFA, ROC and GMDSS – GOC.)
Award of NWKO NCV Certificate.
CONVERTING NWKO NCV TO 2 MATES F.G
ENTRY REQUIREMENT:- Served as a NWKO NCV Officer for a period of 6 months on a trading ship of above 500 gross ton.
Foundation course:- 2 Months including written examination. Candidates are permitted to attend the Foundation Course and appear for its examination after completion of 6 months of sea service.
Functions Duration :- 4 months – Competency course for Second Mate of foreign going ships.
Written &Orals (External Exams conducted by MMD)
Candidates are required to appear and successfully pass in all subjects as specified for Second Mate F.G., i.e. six papers in the three functions including signals.
Certification:
On completion of the written and oral examination including the required modular courses as per the requirement of the META manual Vol I and II, candidates will be awarded Certificate of Competency as Second Mate of a foreign going ship (Officer In-charge of a Navigational Watch) on board ships of 500 Gross tons or more as per the provisions of regulation II/1 of STCW 1978 as amended.
This issues with the approval of Director General of Shipping.

SALOON RATINGS
- A) Cook
B) General steward
Course Name: Certificate Course in Maritime Catering
Course Duration: 6 Months
Age – Between 17.5 to 25 years
Qualification – Pass with aggregate 40% marks in 12th standard from any stream, from a recognized Board with English as a subject. The candidate to obtain atleast 40% mark.
Medical – medically fit
Course Name: Orientation Course for catering personnel
Course Duration: 6 Months
Age – Between 18 to 25 years
Qualification – Candidates holding Degree/Diploma in Hotel management from recognized and reputed board or the universities. The candidates should have scored a minimum of 40 % marks in English language at 10th / 12th standard examination.
Medical – Medically fit including eye sight and hearing

ENGINE SIDE ENTRY
CAREER PROGRESSION :
ENGINE RATING
Duration of the course – 6 Months
Academic Qualification –Pass 10th or equivalent examination with Science and Maths as subject with aggregate 40% and 40% marks in English language.
- Age Limit :- 17.5 to 25 years

CANDIDATE WILL SAIL ON SHIP FOR 6-9 MONTHS DEPENDIING ON THE COMPANY ‘S CONRTACT
THEN WILL APPLY FOR WATCHKEEPING CERTIFICATE TO SAIL AS WIPER.
NOTE:- The Ratings Should be Sponsored** by any shipping Company,or in some cases non-sponsored.
**Sponsorship would mean that a shipping company would pay for your course and assure you the training and job in return of signing a contract.
From Trainee Wiper To Wiper
Category – I
Rating with Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Engine Rating.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum 6 months sea service in the deck department, as applicable
Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
SSC Mark sheet/ Pass certificate, if not exempted
Completed approved training record book for watch keeping ratings
Category – II
Rating without approved Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Engine Rating.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum 15 months sea service in the deck department, as applicable – full service under INSA/MASSA/FOSMA/ICCSA and/or approved RPSL companies with entry in Indian CDC.
Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
Completed approved training record book for watch keeping ratings
Note:- Candidates belonging to category II, but doesn’t have approved training record book for watch keeping can submit their applications to CMMI FC. After assessment of documents for eligibility by CMMI Facilitation centre, candidate should undergo examination conducted by BEST for watch keeping ratings. (maximum three attempts). If successful in examination, candidate is eligible for issuance of WKC by CMMI-FC on the strength of PASS certificate from BEST.
Category – III
Rating without approved Pre-Sea training as GP rating or Engine Rating – Part or full service through Non RPSL agencies.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum 15 months sea service in the deck department, as applicable – Service under through Non RPSL agencies having entries in foreign CDCs.
Holding Indian CDC – Category of CDC is irrelevant
Note: Candidates belonging to category III can submit their applications to CMMI FC. After assessment of documents for eligibility check by CMMI Facilitation centre, candidate should undergo examination conducted by BEST for watch keeping ratings (maximum three attempts). If successful in examination, candidate is eligible for issuance of WKC by CMMI on the strength of PASS certificate from BEST.
ENGINE OFFICER:
B.E. MARINE ENGINEERING
Course: 4-Year Degree Course in Marine Engineering

Course Duration: 4 Years
Minimum Academic Qualification:
- (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60%.
OR
(b) Candidate can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course provided he has passed 1st year training from the Alternate Training Scheme, approved by D.G. Shipping (This will not be applicable to MERI.)
OR
(c ) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 1st year from the Engineering College in other streams like Mechanical or Electrical approved by AICTE with minimum 60% average marks.
OR
(d ) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years Diploma Course in Mechanical / Marine / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics, from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma Course.
OR
(e) Candidates can join 2nd year of 4-Year Marine Engineering Degree Course who have passed 3 years Diploma Course, in addition to the three years regular Diploma Course in Mechanical/ Electrical /Electrical & Electronics Engineering, in following categories, from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% of aggregate marks in the last year of Diploma Course ;-
Electrical Engineering Stream : Electrical Power System Electrical and Electronics
Engineering Stream : Digital Electronics / Electronics and Communications/ Electronics & Telecommunication / Industrial electronics / Electronics / Electronics Production & Maintenance / Instrumentation /Instrumentation & Control Mechanical Engineering Stream : Automobile /Machine Tools and Maintenance /Plant Engineering / Production Technology /Production Engineering /Advanced Diploma in Tool and Die Making
[Note : The candidates in this category are not eligible for exemption in the examination of Applied Mechanics and Heat Engine subject of Part ‘A’ MEO Class IV and Class II of Certificate of Competency Examinations.]
OR
(f) A candidate can join 2nd year of 4 Year’s Marine Engineering Degree course who have passed 4 years Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering from the colleges approved by AICTE or State Board of Technical Education with minimum 55% aggregate marks in the last year of diploma course.
AND
The candidates should have obtained with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th Std or in the Degree / Diploma course conducted by recognized Board or University.

Maximum Age Limit: 25 Years.
MedicalFitness:
Medically fit including eye sight and hearing as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended
EYE SIGHT : In case of candidates joining B. Tech. (Marine Engineering) degree course, glasses may be allowed but eye sight in each eye beyond plus/minus 2.5 will be rejected. Unaided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye minimum.
Marine Engineering Course for Graduates
Duration: 1 Year
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a) Graduation in BE (Mechanical) Engineering / Naval Architecture with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th or in Degree Exam.
OR
(b) The candidates holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical and Automation Engineering after attending a course of 4 years duration from an UGC recognized university and or approved by AICTE, with a minimum marks of 50% in the final year, and a minimum 50% marks in English language at the 10th or 12th standard or in degree examination. These candidates will not get full exemption from MEO Class IV and MEO Class II Certificate of Competency Exam but require to appear and pass the “Heat Engines” written paper of MEO Class IV Part ‘A’ CoC Exam and “Thermodynamics & Heat Transmission” written paper of MEO Class II Part ‘A’ CoC Exam.
Maximum Age Limit: 28 Years.
Marine Engineering Course for Diploma Holders
Duration: 2 Years
Minimum Academic Qualification: (a) Pass Diploma in Mechanical /Marine/ Naval Architecture / Electrical / Electrical and Electronics Engineering with minimum marks of 50% in final year and with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th, 12th std or Diploma exam.
(b) Passed Diploma in Shipbuilding Engineering with minimum marks of 50% in final year (4 year course) and with minimum of 50% marks in English language at 10th, 12th std or Diploma exam.
Maximum Age Limit: 28 Years.
Marine Engineering under Alternate Training Scheme
Duration: 2 Years 6 Months
Minimum Academic Qualification: Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% and with minimum 50% marks in English language at 10th or 12th std exam.
Maximum Age Limit: 25 Years.

IMU-CET – Indian maritime university common entrance test is the entrance exam for Merchant navy, which is conducted by the Indian Maritime University.
Yes Merchant Navy is private job. Most of the shipping companies are operated under private body, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is Indian government corporation.
Salary in Merchant Navy, starts from 500 usd in foreign company and RS. 12000 In Indian company though the pay structure differ from company to company.

Yes Swimming test is conducted after the course is successfully finished however, training for the same is provided by the institute and all candidates need to successfully pass the test.
The answer for the above question is “YES” , however a candidate can join the ship in the capacity of GP rating and later with sea-time and exam one can reach up to the rank of Captain.
