Shipping master is the head of the Government shipping office,assisted by Dy.Shipping master,Asstt.Shiping Master and staff.

MMD Head Quarters controls the direct administrative of Shipping Office.

The DG Shipping Office are located at Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and are established under Section 11 of MS Act 1958

Responsibility of DG Shipping offices

Monitor the seafarers during their engagement and discharge.

Treatment and welfare of seamen,

Settlement of disputes between the seafarers & their employers,

Issue of continuous discharge certificates (CDC) under ,

registration of cadets recruited by shipping companies,

Issue of Inward/Outward clearance to ships calling at their respective ports,

Enquiries related to any death onboard ships etc.
