Join Merchant Navy Deck Cadet – Cadet is a trainee who is there on the ship to learn as much as possible. Usually, the deck cadet has to assist the chief officer at all times, however, the chief can assign him/her according to the situation. The cadet can be asked to perform jobs such as taking sounding, painting, ballasting/de-ballasting, cargo watches, navigational watch, paperwork, maintenance jobs, etc.
Deck Cadet Requirements
DNS – Diploma in Nautical Science
Duration of the course: – 1 Year
Academic Qualification: –Pass in (10+2) or equivalent examination with an average PCM score of 60% and 50% in the English language.
Physical Standards:– Medically fit as per the standards set by M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000.
Eyesight:-Candidates have to qualify a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department before being finally selected for the course. They should have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should be free from colour blindness (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000; as amended
DNS Cadet Career Progression:
PHASE 1 :- 1 year course at the Training institute
PHASE 2 :- 18 months training on ships.
PHASE 3:- On completion of the sea-time, one can give the 2nd mate examination – certificate of competency.
Which consist of:-
Foundation course- 2 Months
Functions- 4 Months
Written &Orals (External Exams conducted by MMD)

- Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) Course
- Radar Observer Course(ROC/ ARPA)
- Elementary First Aid (EFA)
- Medical First Aid (MFA)
- Basic Fire Fighting (BFF)
- 6. Advanced Fire Fighting (AFF)
- Personal Survival Techniques (PST)
- PSSR – (Personal Safety and Social Responsibility )
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat (PSCRB)
- CTF/OTF/GTF – Container/Oil/Gas tanker familiarization course
- ECDIS-(Electronic Chart Display and Information System )

PHASE 4:- On clearing the examination, the candidate will provided with coc, and he boards the ship as a 3rd officer and is then promoted to 2nd officer
BSc in Nautical Science
Duation of the course :- 3years B.Sc Degree in Nautical Science
Academic Qualification :- Pass in(10+2) From a Recognized Board with 45% Average in PCM
Age Limit :- 25 Years
Nautical Science Career Progression:
PHASE 1 :- 3 year course at the Training institute
PHASE 2 :- 12 months training on ships.
PHASE 3:- On completion of the sea-time, one can give the 2nd mate examination – certificate of competency.
