Private ports in India

India has 13 Major Ports and approximately200 Minor Ports situated in nine different States.

Ennore, a port in Tamil Nadu is known as satellite port of Chennai ,it has been corporatized and incorporated in 1999 under the Companies Act of1956.

2/3 shares of the port are owned by the Government of India, 1/3 by the Chennai Port Trust.

Port Blair (Andaman and Nicobar Islands) is considered as trust ports under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963, operating as (semi) autonomous bodies under the administrative control of the Ministry of Shipping.

The following ports are Corporatized as Major Ports:

Visakhapatnam, Ennore ,Kolkata, Paradip

JNPT,Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin,Mormugao,New Mangalore, Mumbai, Kandla and Port Blair.

Major Ports are included in the Union list of the Indian Constitution

Major Port is declared as major port by the central government by notification in the Official Gazette.

The Minor Ports are under the jurisdiction of the Governments of the various maritime states (Pondichierry, Kerala, Karnataka, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat as well as Lakshadweep Islands and Andaman and Nicobar Islands).
